So in the news today - "IN A preview of his report to Congress this week, US commander General David Petraeus yesterday expressed disappointment in the lack of progress towards political reconciliation in Iraq."
The latest ides were to send some more soldiers over to provide more security for the Iraqi governement, which in turn would igve it the breathing space it needs to get going. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case, as I think most of us figured it would be.
See, and tell me if im wrong here , the thing is to create that political process you are going to need leaders (political) who are passionate about what their doing. I haven't seen anything that suggest they have any leaders like this. I think we could stay over there for a longtime and not se any progress because they need to want the progress. Then they need to take it. Freedom and liberties can't be given, they must be fought for and taken with the force of will.
I think Ben can agree with me on this one... so whaddya think?

Yeah, I gotta agree with you there. I wouldn't have thought all this true a year or two ago, but time has shown that they just don't have the drive to run themselves - at least not the way we think they should. These are a people that have been under a dictatorship their entire lives, and a cruel one since the 80's. That they haven't rebelled in that time means they have accepted fear as a way of life. For them, a free government would be nice, but it's not their driving force like it was for the Colonial Americans. They didn't fight and die for their freedom, so they will not cherish it. And even if they had, we forget that our own government was not created overnight, it took years and years to get it right, and it didn't even work the first time.
So yeah, you got me rambling again, and what I thought would be a 2-minute LJ check has now turned into 15 mins, thanks a lot :P
